We use it primarily for a cross-platform chat solution. It is an alternative to group texts and long email chains.
  • Speed - It's always very fast
  • Ease of Use - very easy to use
  • Notifications - Automatic notifications are key
  • More tightly integrated video/audio calling capabilities
  • Better integration with other software
Mattermost works very well. It is easy to setup and deploy, and maintenance is super easy as well.

We use Mattermost at Ortiz Gaming / IGS as the main communicator for all teams, integrating the offices in Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and the Philippines. We have previously used other solutions and chat services, but they were in some cases expensive for the number of users we have, or inefficient. We have migrated to Mattermost in the middle of the Covid pandemics, and we are very happy with the results so far.
  • Communication.
  • Ease of use.
  • User experience.
  • Fast performance.
  • Multiple devices support.
  • More plugins in the ecossystem.
  • Improve the search functionality (for example, including text in images).
  • Improve the message formatting tools during composition.
- Companies where the option is to have an on-premises server, running the community edition.
- Companies that want to have the access to the service source code.
- Companies that need a cost-effective communication platform for many users.

Mattermost is used by my company as a cost-effective alternative to other collaboration platforms. It allows us to effectively delineate our different projects and ongoing discussions, and add external users as needed to collaborate on specific projects without exposing them to other business discussions and unrelated projects. We have installed the self-managed version on our own server and have not leveraged the paid enterprise support.
  • User management
  • Discussion delineation (channels)
  • Multi-platform support
  • Easy installation and maintenance
  • Notifications - buggy on iOS and macOS
  • Embedded media integration - some attachments only download, or don't display/navigate well inside the app
  • Integrations with email and calendar would be nice if native to the app
Mattermost is a fantastic alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams in terms of cost-effectiveness, simplicity of maintenance, and control over your business data. We chose Mattermost because our company's structure is cost-prohibitive for Slack and Microsoft Teams. Mattermost allows us the user control we need to attach external guest users to specific projects, as well as the security of knowing exactly where our business data is stored. A self-managed installation of Mattermost may not be as effective when applied to large, rapidly scaling teams as that may require more IT support than available - however they do provide a paid, managed option.

Communication with the whole team and subteams. Integration with other tools and software like GitLab. Arranging appointments and small planning of to-dos in Mattermost Boards. Possibility of self-hosting/on-premise hosting.
  • easy setup
  • customization
  • privacy focused
  • multi platforms
  • more integrations
  • bigger focus on selfhosting
Small and medium-sized teams that need a communication and meeting arranging tool with the possibility to integrate external tools or want to customize their chat platform very specific. Also, when teams need custom plugins / integrations for their work, it is easy to develop the integrations themselves, because of the good documentation and open-source project.

We use mattermost for all our internal communications & to collaborate. It's straightforward and easy to use as an instant messenger. We can integrate other tools that we use so that we don't miss out on important notifications. Also, helps us share files instantly instead of always resorting to email. During the pandemic, mattermost helped the team collaborate while working from home just as effectively as we did while at office. Thankfully, the tool also supports various plugins that help automate certain actions.
  • Polls - the polls feature on mattermost seems to be perfect
  • Text formatting on mattermost is great with a variety of formatting options that also includes code blocks
  • Pinning and saving messages that you can come back to later on
  • Search functionality needs improvement
  • The mobile app needs serious work, extremely buggy and hard to use
  • GIFs have been removed, would help if an alternate service could be incorporated
Mattermost is well suited as an alternative to other corporate IMs for small startups due to it being competitively priced in the market. However, given that most of the bugs/improvements take quite some time for them to fix/implement, it may not be the best option for medium to large sized companies that are fast paced and need a solid tool.

Mattermost the most prolific and easy to use open source platform for secure collaboration and increasing our productivity by bringing my team communication together, tasks and project management and workflow orchestration into a unified platform for agile software development. Establishing a communication channel for different teams and diff projects has been so easy. Sharing of files and communication between my teams in different departments has been one of the best thing.
  • Markdown format for text messaging is great.
  • Easy to add status.
  • Kanban boards for my teams.
  • Online and Offline indicators.
  • The one dislike is how I miss my notifications at times on my mobile app and also desktop app.
  • Quick audio call feature I guess should be included in this project and tasks management tool to boost communication.
I like the custom emoji feature which allows me to reply to any comment in a very fun and engaging manner. I like how this tool synchronises our business messages from various contexts. Its easy to set up marketing programs and automate ads on any leading social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Mattermost is the staple in our day to day communication. Not only witht the teams but also individual developers and people outside our team. Its where we ask questions about our work and have casual conversation when working from home.
  • self hosted
  • groups (both locked and open)
  • communication
  • integrations with other software
  • notifications sometimes glitchy
  • mac os app needs improvement
Great tool for communication with your colleagues and teams.
The main selling point is that it can be self hosted. this way we are in control of the data.

Initially, our staff was using commercial products specifically for chats and collaboration, but they were paid basically. We were charged per user. However, I found out Mattermost. They give self-hosted solutions (Mattermost open source), and it has features that could be purchased based on different requirements. Most of our needs are satisfied with the open-source version.

The main purpose of using it was security concerns. We wanted our data to be only to us, on-premises. So this satisfied the use case to have Mattermost self-hosted on our corporate rack. To date, we have been using it among our staff without any trouble. Mattermost has good options to backup data (store) on cloud platforms too. Also, our use cases consist of DevOps components integration which are satisfied (notifications) from our Jenkins Infrastructure. It has good simplicity of use, so I'll recommend it over other self-hosted chat solutions to anybody.
  • Simplicity of use
  • Integrations
  • Data storage connections for backup purpose or storing media
  • Really good administration of users and sake of control
  • DevOps friendly across IT team
  • Some of the features in paid plans could be free, however, they have much offered in free plan (self-hosted)
  • The Desktop App we use on windows has some bugs, like when Mattermost is down and comes back up, the app needs restart
I'll recommend going for Mattermost if your use case is DevOps, integrations, internal organisation chat solution. Mattermost has the option to backup data also in cloud platforms. There is huge simplicity of use for teams. Our organisation uses it seamlessly without any hassle. For having remote teams, we can even host their product ourselves over any cloud platform for high availability. Also, we can do purchase upgrades there as per needs.

Mattermost is the main communication tool inside our company. We need to get in touch and maintain communications with several groups of developers, managers, and other groups inside our organization, sharing documents, code, and other resources, using different platforms (Desktop, Mobile)
  • Search messages
  • Create groups
  • Pin messages
  • Secure communications
  • Use markdown in messages
  • Multi Thread management and it's UI separation. Could be with distinct colors.
  • Better notifications in mobile. Sometimes new messages did not send notifications
  • Better help when using markdown
  • Better Archive organization
Well suited for the Need for secure communications. Need for different communication channels with different groups. Need for live resource sharing. Access on desktop and mobile simultaneously. Less Appropriate for Code Sharing Resource Archiving

We have internal private talks that we do not want to share or expose all this information on public servers, so we use Mattermost internally and also we are using Mattermost for some teams. The beauty of Mattermost is that you can host on your personal servers.
  • Messages.
  • Playbooks.
  • Boards.
  • CI/CD.
  • Integrations.
  • Project Management.
If you're looking for a replacement for Slack it is a good choice. It is cheaper and makes more sense.

Mattermost is our main chat platform which is used daily by tens of employees across our company and our contractors. Its web and mobile apps while fairly basic, work well with our on-premise deployment. Mattermost tries to distinguish itself from Slack/Teams by being privacy-focused by allowing anyone to host it and I think it's one of its key features.
  • On-prem deployment.
  • Limited tracking/telemetry.
  • Scales well, doesn't require much maintenance.
  • Basic features like custom status, collapsed reply threads are JUST rolling out - kind of slow for a workplace chat app.
  • I don't really get the idea of Playbooks and Boards - there are better, dedicated tools for stuff like this and it's not so easy to turn off.
On a limited budget, Mattermost seems to be a perfect fit for such a team/organisation. It's pretty easy to roll out and to invite contractors which could be key at a lower scale.

Mattermost is being used across an entire organization; however, it enables us to keep multiple workgroups in sync with each other and formulate best approach methods to tackle various problems that arise both internally and externally to the organization. We have geographically diverse individuals working within cross-spectrum workgroups to address problems that span vertically.
  • Mattermost has an excellent mobile client.
  • Mattermost has very fast & reliable instant messaging features.
  • Mattermost integrates to other systems we use such as Big Blue Button.
  • Mattermost has some issues with its messaging system.
  • Mattermost's code is not straightforward for developing customizations.
I believe that Mattermost is one of a family of best of breed applications that we rely on. If someone were to ask me about Mattermost, I would have no trouble recommending it for their needs because it has been able to do for us what we had hoped for. We had tried other applications that touted similar features, but Mattermost was the first one we tried that actually delivered on those expectations.

Mattermost is currently used by our development teams to communicate with each other throughout the day. It allows me as our project manager to quickly communicate support issues, escalate user requests, and clarify information with the team. Team members use it to communicate merge requests, requests for code review, notification of deployments to various environments, etc. We have channels for each team as well as a general non-team channel where team members can communicate about anything else they wish to share. This keeps non-project related information out of the specific channels and gives the team a place for more free-form communication. Mattermost is an integral part of our daily communication. Because of the success of this solution with our development team, we will be rolling it out to replace an antiquated chat solution for the rest of the company across the departments.
  • Allows individual channels for teams, departments, or projects
  • Easy to use
  • Really nothing I would change or add. It works well and doesn't give us any issues.
I have used several different solutions like Mattermost, even while using Mattermost internally but using other well-known solutions to communicate with vendor teams during projects. Mattermost has a small footprint, is easy to use, and makes our communication more accessible. It has a web or desktop client. I prefer the desktop simply because I already have enough tabs open in multiple browsers for my job. Having the desktop app open and ready is easier for my workflow. Other team members use the web version and are equally happy with it. I keep Mattermost open at all times and even use it when I work off-site to keep communication open with the team. I like Mattermost the best of all similar solutions I have used over the last ten years.

We used Mattermost for a few months as our corporate chat tool to enable cross-regional discussions about work matters.
  • Self-hosted option
  • Many features on-par with Slack, such as public and private rooms
  • Open API supporting integrations with many services
  • UI glitches were frequent occurrences
  • Base pricing is competitive with Slack, but enterprise features come at a hefty price
  • Webhooks are cumbersome to set up compared to Slack
Mattermost may be most useful in a highly-regulated environment where self-hosting a chat solution is essential. But many cloud providers now offer HIPPA/FIPS-compliant chat solutions so it may no longer be necessary to self-host your own chat solution. Recommend doing your own research to be sure you aren't investing prematurely in a self-hosted option.

We use Mattermost as our team communication tool, and as a substitute to Slack. It is being used across the organization. We had a business + regulatory requirement where all our conversations with customers had to be on our own servers for audit purposes. While we had not opened up the tool to our customers, we decided to start with a tool which would meet this long term requirement. Mattermost solved this requirement for us while giving us the flexibility to host it on our own servers and have full control over the application.
  • Self hosted with capability to store and search for conversations from day one
  • Capability to create multiple projects with different set of users for each project
  • Capability to seamlessly plug into 3rd party applications just like Slack
  • Self hosting also means self management, and hence requires at least one person with technical know-how to manage the product
  • Major upgrades to the product can be challenging and are required to be done from the backend
  • While Mattermost is open-source and free, hosting Mattermost is not, and that needs to be considered by anyone deploying this application
Mattermost is well suited for startups what want to keep cost low, want to be able to keep their conversations for life, and want more flexibility and control over their web applications.
